Ellen Howard

Ellen Howard was always inspired by the arts, growing up in New England in an artistic family. It was only after a career in Finance, a move to Northern California, and her kids began elementary school that she got the opportunity to pursue her desire to create. She has studied with many top artists and continues to actively pursue opportunities to grow and learn her craft.

As an avid explorer and traveler, Ellen is curious about the transitory elements of nature and loves discovering quiet unexplored areas. She is passionate about evoking mood or emotion in her paintings. True enjoyment comes from capturing the light as it spreads across a scene. Some of her favorite subjects are marshes, areas along the Pacific Coast, vineyards, and incredible skies at sunset and before or after storms. Ellen is recognized for her tranquil and peaceful paintings.

Ellen’s work has been featured in American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, and Plein Air Magazine, as well as in the book The Great American Paint Out published by ACC Art Books. She was chosen as an artist in the “5 to Watch” section of Fine Art Connoisseur’s August/September 2023 issue and was featured as the “Spotlight Artist” in the California Art Club’s July 2023 Newsletter.

Her work has been shown in Salmagundi Club Exhibitions and the past six California Art Club Gold Medal exhibitions and she has won awards in the California Art Club’s  Excellence of Traditional Fine Art Competitions, Huse/Skelly Gallery, Frank Bette Paint Out, Mendocino Open Paint Out, and Capitola Plein Air Paint Out. Her paintings have been included in shows at the Peninsula Museum of Art, Burlingame, CA, the Triton Museum, Santa Clara, CA, Salmagundi Club, New York City, NY, and the Mendocino Art Center, CA, as well as numerous group and solo shows. A featured artist and presenter for the Mendocino Paint Out, Howard has also taught workshops in Northern California and Europe and is an active member of the California Art Club, currently serving as a Vice President.

“My art is centered around living a faithful life and trusting in the unfolding of the great tapestry of life.
